Thanks for the reply. The guest OS is Ubuntu 12.04 server without any customizations. I also tried 12.10 server with the same result.
The VMware tools version is 9.0.0.15210 (build-782409), from the output of "vmware-toolbox-cmd -v" in the guest OS.
