Hello,
I have such a problem twice in VMware Workstation.
Nothing helps, mount unmount...problem exists.
First time it solved after reinstalling VMware Tools.
Second time nothing helped, only fresh install of OS 
It is not hardware problem, only software, so you need to look in VMware.
