Encrypted USB drive is auto-connected whenever any VM starts

Hi,

I recently upgraded from vmware Workstation 8 to 10.0.1. I just realized an issue that was already present in the old version is still present in the current:

  • I connect my TrueCrypt-encrypted USB hard drive to my computer.
  • I mount the encrypted drive and work with it in the main (host) machine and have files open.
  • Whenever I start any virtual machine, the USB drive is immediately disconnected from the main machine and connected to the virtual machine though it never was connected to that VM before.

This results in data loss because it does not matter whether I'm just using the disk and e.g. copying data or not!

Normally a USB device is only auto-connected to a VM if the VM is running, has focus and then the USB device is plugged in. OR a usb device was connected to a VM and is reconnected when the VM is started the next time.

But in this case the USB device is connected to the main (host) machine and in use and the VM is not running but started afterwards. Also the VM was just created last week and the USB drive was never connected to that VM.

Before I thought I might have accidentally connected the USB drive manually to a VM and so it re-connects (because it happened several times in the past with different machines). But, as said, it's a totally new VM so now I'm sure it's an issue and not caused by me.

Is there a workaround for this? Or do I have to check and alter every VM config file and disable auto-connect (what in general works fine and I'd like to keep it; it just goes wild for the encrypted device).

Kind regards

Benjamin
