Thin Provisioned VMDKs consume all available space

Hi,

  • Server: Win 2008 R2 with SP1 (file server)
  • Storage: VMDKs on VMFS5 datastore (thin provisioned), underlying Fibre SAN storage
  • vSphere: vCenter Server 5 Standard, ESXi 5.0 Patch 2 (build 515841)

... So, I have a File Server virtual machine running Windows 2008 R2 with SP1.  The System partition (C:) was successfully thin provisioned (VMDK using 13GB of 40GB) .

However, for all subsequent virtual hard-disks created on the server, the NTFS partition is very slow to format - and the actual size of the VMDK creeps slowly up to the full size of the VHD (you can see the gradual increase in VMDK size in the Datastore Browser during the formatting process).

The VMFS datastore we're creating new VHDs on is version 5.  All virtual machines with VHDs on VMFS version 3 appear to be thin-provisioned OK.

Does anyone know what might be happening here?
