VMKernel Port Group

Below is the network configuration of one of our ESX 4.1 host:

1) VM Network

2) Service Console with 1 IP

3) VMKernel with 1 IP for vMotion and iSCSI, named as VMKernel_iSCI

I can see there are 4 NICs attached to this host.

Now I just came to know, that using same VMKernel for vMotion and iSCSI is not a good practise.

1st question

So I want to know how is the network mapping in ESX host. Is it;

1 NIC = 1 VM Network

1 NIC = 1 Service Console

1 NIC = 1 VMKernel port group which is currently used for vmotion and iscsi

In standard switch, there are 2 NICs configured.

2nd question

I want to remove vmotion from 1 VMKernal port (VMKernel_iSCI) and create a dedicated for vmotion.

I know I will be requiring another IP address, but what about NIC, will it be;

1 NIC = VMKernel_iSCSI

1 NIC = VMKernel_vMotion

Please explain.

Thanks,

Mihir
