Re: Mac Catalina and Fusion Has Black Screen

I set up a Catalina system with the latest beta yesterday and got the black screen problem. Uninstalling v11.1.1 with CleanMyMac, restarting, and installing 11.1.0 gave me the opportunity to enable Screen Sharing. Updating to 11.1.1 from within the application failed, but installing from a downloaded dmg succeeded.

ESXi vSwitch - dot1Q - GNS3 EtherSwitch

Hello Folks,

Its a lab setup. As am running out of ethernet ports, ESXi is spining on  the VMware workstation 15.

The VMware workstation vmnets are in e1000.

Am trying to connect to the ESXi vswitch uplink (vmnic) to a etherswitch in the GNS3.

Am unable to establish a dot1Q trunk  between ESXi vSWITCH and the Etherswitch.

I appreciate if someone throw light on this issue.

I noticed a similar case here vSwitch not tagging traffic but not sure still it could associate with vmWare workstation.

Thanks,

Re: Scrolling issue in GNOME (Ubuntu 18.04) when non-default keyboard layout is chosen

This has been driving me insane for at least a year, it trips me dozens of times a day as I have to constantly switch my Ubuntu 18.04 host out of French every time I use my Windows 10 guest o/s.

The new info in this post is fascinating: I might try installing two more layouts I will never use and having my French layout fourth. Or make it first since I use it more than English.

But I am happy to hear it might eventually get fixed.

Re: NIC teaming in vswitch: Why IP hash needs physical switch ports set as etherchannel?

I don't know the real technical reason, as I don't like port channels in my VMWare environment, its rarely needed and the other methods work better except for special cases. If I had to guess your assuming the vswitch willl do something when it may not. They say the same thing in other kbs to,

VMware Knowledge Base

it says

"Route based on IP Hash load balancing requires that the physical switch ports be combined into an EtherChannel (sometimes called an aggregation bond, port-channel). This ensures that the same hashing algorithm is used for traffic returning in the opposite direction."

Take a look at this gentleman's blog, as it looks like this is caused with using an HP image.  You may want to contact HP for verification, however this looks to be a probable issue for you as well.  Maybe a bit late, however if anything good knowledge to your issue.

Horizon View 7.9 4K Monitor Poor Performance

$

Hi Everyone,

We are currently testing a new horizon view deployment and can not get good performance with single 4k monitors. Youtube playback is horrible and general VM performance is laggy on anything above a 1080P panel. We have run the optimization tool and are currently using Blast Extreme. I have tried pretty much every combination of settings for the Horizon client as well as changing GPO settings for the Blast Protocol. We have also tried PcoIP and received similar results. We also submitted a case with VMware and had an engineer verify our setup and he stated this was normal behavior when using 4K panels. At this point I am thinking we are limited by CPU clock speed but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. We also tried using vGPU and grid with a Tesla T4 card and still got very poor performance. I have listed out out cluster specs along with the VM specs we are using for Horizon View. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cluster Specs:

4 Node vSAN cluster

10GB Networking

All Flash Storage

ESXi 6.7U2

Host Specs:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) Silver 4110 CPU @ 2.10GHz

200GB Ram Per Host

All Flash Storage

VDI VM Specs:

4v vCPU

16GB Ram

VM Version 14

VMware Tools 10341

VMs on host removed from vCenter

Hi,

We have a ESXi 5.5 environment (soon to be 6.7 on new hardware and storage) with 6 HP hosts connected to a Nimble for shared storage. We recently had a host completely die on the weekend. A colleague removed that host from the cluster in vCenter. I was then called in, and was able to get the VMs on that host powered up again by browsing the Nimble datastores in vCenter, right clicking the VMX file for each VM, adding back to the inventory on different hosts and powering them up.

The host that died has now been repaired by HP, and when I go onto the ESXi web interface for that host, I can still see all of the VMs on there. So my question is, can I just add this host back into the cluster, and vCenter will detect that the VMs are now on other hosts and take necessary action to avoid conflicting with the already powered up VMs, or should I un-register all of these VMs on that host before adding it to the cluster again? I just want to avoid any issues with the VMs conflicting when I add the host back into the cluster in vCenter.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Deso1ator,

Feedback noted. We will work on it.

Can you please try whether this is some kind of GUI issue? After entering the virtual disk's size, change the provisioning type to Thick, and then back to Thin.

What are you testing, just full screen video?

What are you testing from, thin clients / windows desktops?

I haven't testing 4k yet, I have users using it and they aren't complaining, but I don't think they are doing full screen video. Check the endpoint, if that can support h265(hevc) decoding it may help, they added support in 7.7. I'm pending our upgrade from 7.4 to 7.9 to test that, but its supposed to be alot more efficent. There is youtube video online of someone showing the performance but its only 1080p

some things that helped me:

test geneve tunnel pings from the vxlan stack

[root@esx004:~] esxcli network ip interface ipv4 get

vmk10  192.168.65.70   255.255.255.192  192.168.65.127   STATIC        0.0.0.0     false
vmk50  169.254.1.1     255.255.0.0      169.254.255.255  STATIC        0.0.0.0     false

[root@esx004:~] ping 192.168.65.65

[root@esx004:~] vmkping ++netstack=vxlan 192.168.65.65
PING 192.168.65.65 (192.168.65.65): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.65.65: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.735 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.65.65: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.825 ms

2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.735/0.780/0.825 ms

Also my geneve tunnel pnics are trunked and I used a Transport VLAN tag in the uplink profile

I can't tell you for sure what's going to happen in this case. However, I'd rather be careful, and unregister the VMs.

If you are still interested in seeing what will happen, you may leave one, or two VM's registered.

We are testing full screen video and non full screen video. The client is a Windows 10 Laptop with a Core i7 processor that has no issues rendering multiple 4K panels. We have also tried with and without H. 264 encoding.

It depends on the graphics card in the laptop, and I think you get a "Allow High Efficiency Video Decoding (HEVC) " option in the client if h265 is supported, its different then h264. Its only available in blast

vmrun.exe starting app hidden

Hello, I'm trying to use vmrun.exe to launch an app in guest from the host machine with this command :

"C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmrun.exe" -T ws -gu Administrateur -gp XXXX runProgramInGuest "C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows 7 x64

\Windows 7 x64.vmx" "C:\Users\Administrateur\Desktop\programtorun.exe" "some parameters"

In the task manager I see the program effectively run but its window is not visible and I really need it.

Is it possible and how ?

Thanks in advance.

Worked like a charm !

I setup the following command to run as a Custom Task on re-connection.  Works great.

I've never played around with the Predefined Settings -> Settings Types before....  I guess it's time to investigate further!

FlexEngine.exe -r DynamicDEVsMatter.zip -i "%UEMConfigShare%\Windows Settings\ScreenSaverTrigger.ini
