vSphere Availability not Working

$

Good Afternoon,

I am attempting to get HA working on a two host cluster.  Hardware is brand new (Dell PER440 and ME4012).  Hosts are directly connected to the SAN and both can see the datastore.  We have vSphere Essentials Plus setup and I spun up a test VM with Windows Server 2016.  vMotion works without issue between the hosts.  But the issue occurs when I try and do a failover test.  Right now I have both hosts setup in a cluster and vcenter is setup on a standalone esxi server outside of the cluster.  When I first setup it up, with only host failure response configured it worked...sort of.  To test i yanked the power cables out of host 1 and after a minute or two it did the failover, the only issue was that for some reason it didn't reconnect the network adapter in the host OS, in order to get it to work I had to manually change it from one port group to another on the same host and it connected, was weird.  After that test though it has never worked again, every single time i do any kind of test it always fails with the same generic alarm trigger "vSphere HA Virtual Machine Failover Failed".  I should note that i turned on "Response for Host Isolation" to make it easier to test instead of waiting 5 or 10 minutes for the host to boot back up again.  But I have tried yanking the power cables, pushing the power button until the host turns off, and unplugging the management network cable.  All of them seem to trigger a failover like they are supposed to, but as soon as it tries to do the failover it gives the aforementioned error.  That error is of course completely useless and lists no detailed information, I've lost track of how many forum posts and technical guides/articles I've read trying to figure this out.  I feel like if I could get a look at the log file it would tell me more, but I can't find a log file for vsphere availability anywhere.  None of the folder structure in the articles i've read match what are on my vcenter appliance, seems like perhaps vmware change something in 6.7 and their guides haven't been updated....

ESXI Version: 6.7.0, 8169922

Vcenter Version: 6.7.0.3

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: Page Cannot be Displayed after upgrade to 2.17

I had the same issue today after an attemot to upgarde from 2.14 to 2.17. After some investigation it turned out to be an incompatibility with SQL Server Express 2008.

I originally installed AV 2.13 which came with SQL server express 2008, I upgraded after that to AV 2.14.3 without any problem. Today I wanted to upgrade to 2.17 but ran into a problem after the upgrade seemed to have worked well (no problems noted during the install). The AV web page displayed "Unable to start App Volumes Manager - ODBC::Error: 42000 (102) ...." (see attached screenshot).

After investigation it appears that SQL server express 2008 is not anymore supported as from AV 2.16.

The resolution:

- Stop AV manager service

- take a backup of the database (just in case)

- De-install AV 2.14 (leaving the DB intact)

- upgrade SQL server Express 2008 to SQL server Express 2014 (whcih comes wit the AV 2.17 install)

- Install AV 2.17

Its very funny to find the solution for the case vSwitch not tagging traffic. still works.

I downgraded to workstation from 15 to 10, the dot1Q encapsulation work between EtherSwitch and ESXi vSwitch.

I wish some vmware geek throw some light on this funny fix of downgrading vmware workstation to 10 works, but 15.

Thanks,

Performance impacts of the Spectre and Meltdown patches KB withdrawn?

What happened to the KB describing the performance impacts of fixes for Spectre and Meltdown? The https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/52337 seems to have been withdrawn? That link gives a page not found error.

For instance, these blogs and KBs both link to 52337:

Numerous other non-VMware websites also link to 52337.

Even the Internet archive Wayback Machine, can't seem to display the page (VMware Knowledge Base ) from Sept 2 2018.

It is like there is some vast conspiracy to remove 52337 from the Internet.

Error when running 'Scan for Updates...' in VUM 6.5

I ran the VCSA VUM (6.5) and got the following error:

Scan Entity: "There are errors during the scan operation.  Check the events and log files for details."

I checked the logs in the CLI and saw the following when grep ing for 'error':

[2019-09-06 20:36:41:000 'VciScanTask.ScanTask{60}' 139866374936320 INFO]  [vciTaskBase, 1362] VciTask { id: ScanTask{60}, type: com.vmware.vcIntegrity.ScanTask }: Setting VC task state to: error

That seemed to be the only 'error' in the logs at that time (about one second off the time displayed in the Recent Tasks pane), but it's not very elaborate to be able to resolve the issue.  How can I fix this?

I'm getting the same in my Production environment but no changes have been made to our network since we migrated to the VCSA in both.  I've used the VUM previously to upgrade in both.  We did upgrade the VCSA using the VAMI, recently, but that's about all I can think of that might impact this.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

EDIT:  I just noticed this occurs only when the Virtual Appliance option is the only item checked.  It seems to work other wise, as far as I can tell.

What is the difference between what you wrote:

"Normally the key IS on the invoice. I just checked my email archives and the serial is on the "Order confirmation" email."

and the note I reported:

"...your license key can be found in your order confirmation email."

??

Well I managed to find the answer myself, turns out the Port Group assigned to the VM needs to be the same name on both hosts.

Hi Amin, I did not claim to be trying to use version 4.1.  You will see that I say "4.10".  This was the latest version then offered by VMware a week or so ago.  Anyway, your message prompted me to recheck the latest version offered, and I saw that this was now 5.1.0.  I installed this ... and got exactly the same failure, in both CentOS and Debian.  So still at square one I'm afraid.

The problem in my opinion with just posting links, is it might be easy to miss the info unless the kb is about that very specific issue. It would be easy to miss that part since the bulk is about how enter the key, and where the key can be found is only a footnote. Sharing the kbs are great in my opinion but I also like adding my interpretation of how it solves the posters issue

You should contact your employers helpdesk, they have logs on the server side that may help, and may already be aware of the issue

Thanks sjesse, that's a good suggestion.  I was intending to do this next Monday in any case, when I am back in the office.  I'll update this thread with anything useful that comes out of that.

vSphere Web Client HTML - Clarity wizard in a modal

$

Our plugin adds several items to context menus using the com.vmware.vsphere.client.HtmlPluginModalAction. We want one of these to create a wizard, similar to existing VMware workflows like Create Datastore. We are using Angular and Clarity, which provides a wizard component. However, the Clarity Wizard itself functions like a modal, and attempts to take over the whole screen and cover the background with a semi-transparent layer. This, obviously, looks terrible inside the modal we're given. Is there a standard/approved way to use the Clarity wizard component inside one of these HtmlPluginModalAction modals, or do we need to rebuild the wizard functionality ourselves from simpler Clarity components?

Going to answer my own question here. Adding the following css classes to the clr-wizard does the trick:

class="clr-wizard--inline clr-wizard--no-shadow clr-wizard--no-title"

class="clr-wizard--inline clr-wizard--no-shadow clr-wizard--no-title"

Hi,

Oh.. it is hidden in the footnote...

You post a link to the KB article and then copy&paste the entire content with the disadvantage of hiding the part that it was about.

Sorry I did not see that and not sure the TS would have found it either.

You are correct that the KB had the answer, but you have to read it carefully (Oh.. turns out it was me not reading well - egg meet face)

I do think that sjesse's note make sense though and perhaps just post the relevant quote from the KB.

From your answer:

"It isn't the first time I see you do this or I would have dismissed it as we all make mistakes (I sure do and I certainly have my own "oops misread the question" mishaps)"

I understand that you answered me on the basis of a precedent of a few days ago with another moderator ... and not for what I answered. If I had seen my answer well, it was identical to yours ... the note at the bottom I entered in bold, only to make it more visible.

It is understood that I am not particularly sympathetic, that's why it attacks me... anyway no problem, I take it as a starting point to improve the answers (THE QUESTIONS I READ VERY WELL).

Best regards,

Alessandro Romeo

Re: VMWare Version Support Timeline Policy

Hi =)

Happy to chime in a bit here.

Firstly, we are not planning a v16 (or Fusion v12) until AT LEAST VMworld 2020, full stop.

We'll be extending the support term for 15.x for another 12 months (March 2021).

We do plan to introduce the Windows Hypervisor Platform (i.e. run when hyper-v mode is on, which we demoed at VMworld) features independent of the 'major' release. We're not going to force folks to upgrade just so things work in that mode, we'll ship it in a point update when it's ready (it's not this year, the WHP platform we'll be using needs a lot of work still, but it's progressing very well!... I will say this is a herculean effort by our vShphere core hypervisor engineers tho...)

As for the .5 thing, we never did one before v12.5, and for me it just seemed like the right thing to do given the situation at the time.

A few years ago, a version would last for a long time, but now with platform changes happening so quickly the cost of "it just works" is rising rapidly.

You're right that the price kept going up and up year on year.

That stopped when I took over in 2015. It's not fair, and it's just not cool to penny pinch our customers like that for something that arguably doesn't really change things internally. (it's not like we're a billion dollar product here...)

" I would expect VMWare to be very quick to promote this to try and encourage others (such as myself) to purchase version 15 and be assured that we'll have continued patches beyond 6 months."

When launch happens in about 2 weeks that campaign will be kicked off.

am trying desperately to find some way of justifying / upgrading or seeing some light but each rock I turn over seems to be showing another concern, not another incentive.

I can understand that. It's been a tumultuous couple of years for us.

Let me share a bit about where we're at, maybe it helps folks understand a bit about how and why we got here...

A few years ago, we found that we weren't getting the resources we needed to thrive when we were in the End User Computing business group at VMware (where Horizon View and AirWatch live), to say the least.

There was some unexpected and unfortunate staff changes that happened by folks who, well.. let's say it didn't work out well for their careers at VMware and they're now gone.

So, last year we made the case that we really belong with the vSphere group where our core platform is developed.

We moved over, and revamped the engineering teams to adapt to the model that vSphere uses for development.

Our first priorities were to completely update our quality programs and our dev process to align with the standard of quality that the vSphere group expects.

So a TON more automation, more hardware, more testing,  more code review, etc...

That takes a lot of work, especially when we have essentially the same product code running on 3 different platforms with 4 different UIs... (Mac, Win, Lin + Player)

Plus, we have these incredible under-the-hood platform changes which are coming about from Apple and Microsoft that we've been having to address faster than we've ever had to before.

Again,  the cost of "it just works" continues to go up.

So we find ourselves here now... The investment to "get our house in order" is incredible, but it's not very visible to the outside world.

So to everyone who's read this far I ask: Where should we go from here?

What do you want to see, both from a pricing and from a feature perspective?

Workstation for me formost is a esxi home lab at home, wiith some general development servers. I rarely have ran into the version restriction as mentioned heras the software tools I've made have used longer term support os versions.

Mostly for a price point once it looks cheaper or more effective to run a physical lab I may let my license go.

For features I'd lke to see anything that makes running a homelab in workstation easier and better. Built in jumbo frames start is but I'd like to see offical vlan support as well. I have more than one workstation license and I use one on my laptop and one on a desktop. Right now I'm doing static routes in my router to either nested esxi host, but I'd like to be able to find a way to run nsx between the two of them, and currently I don't think it will work. I think the vlan tagging part would be something many people like, as I've seen multiple posts about this, all saying its not supported.

Hey Alessandro,

No I had not seen that one (but have now), I think it was another KB post link I saw.

If I had seen the warning from the other moderator, then I would -hopefully- have read your reply better and have spotted the bolded text, or I would simply have dismissed it.

Alas, sadly I did not see either.

The problem we as moderators have is that there are people answering posts who care more about gathering points as about helping out people.

One of the recurring patterns of a points gatherer is:

- they tend to post links to KB articles or links at the internet without answering the question

- tries to answer a lot of posts

- has a "please award points footer"

Seems I misplaced you in that category.

My apologies as I now see you do work hard on trying to help the users out.

That's the main thing we care about as a moderator.

Trying to say things in your own words and then adding a link to "the official doc/KB/whatever" might help the user find the answer easier.

It doesn't have to be long, even just a "please look for foobar in the text" can help already.

No, it doesn't - there's several long threads here with hacks to work around the limitations.  11.5 will support catalina.
