Hi. I am considering moving my vCenter from a VSS to a VDS Port. I have been reading about protecting that with an Ephemeral port. In fact the VMware Validated Design document states that vCenter should run on a VDS Ephemeral port. However, many blogs only want to use Ephemeral as an emergency. I am curious peoples thoughts on it, or if anyone has actually had to use an Ephemeral port in a rescue situation. Thanks,,,
Welcome to the Community,
what's the overall memory consumption of the host? Is it heavily overcommitted?
Ballooning and other memory saving features should only come into effect if the host is low on physical memory, or if a resource pool runs out of resources..
André
The reason why you want to use an Ephemeral port for vCenter is that vCenter is required to manage Distributed Virtual Switches. If - for whatever reason - the vCenter Server VM needs to be reconfigured to get access to the network, you'll only be able to connect it to either an ephemeral port group or a VSS port group while directly connected to an ESXi host.

Only a guess. Maybe one of the keys (CTRL, ALT, AltGr, Win, ...) is stuck!? Sometimes it helps to press, and release each of these keys once.

No, ec706b58-98e7-a27e-2079-00249b1aced0 is/was the original namespace object/path for that vmdk.
Have you attached that vmdk to that test VM?
Is the old vsanDatastore still browsable?
Yes Right it may be reason that below keys are stuck.
CTRL, ALT etc.
So Pleas check it and then try
Hi Bob
I can't attach the vmdk since it does "not" exist.
I can't browse the old vsanDatastore.
I'm 99% sure that the error is the group uuid "ec706b58-98e7-a27e-2079-00249b1aced0" for the DC02.vmdk object.
Is there a way to dump the vmdk data from the vsan object to a new vdisk object?
Probably because your datastores are over committed. If you select thin provision when you build a VM it only writes on demand, so you can tell a VM it has 100 GB of storage while it only uses 10 GB. This adds up so say you have 40 TB of datastore space and only 30TB is used, but if all the space those thin provisioned disks filled up you might be at 50TB of data (10 TB over committed). Thin provisioning is good if you keep an eye on it and always keep a little space on your SAN free to add an extant if needed, but can get you intro trouble if you let it fill up.
So usage is the actual space used by thin provisioned disks. Commitment is space provisioned to VMs that they could use if they filled up their thin disks. Since you're over 100% committed, be careful. Keep an eye on it and plan to buy more storage or clean up what you have.
What's the output of partedUtil getptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/<volume-in-question>"?
Btw. unless I'm mistaken, only a single VMFS datastore per LUN is recommended/supported?
André
PS: In addition to the output of the above mentioned command, provide the output of partedUtil getUsableSectors "/vmfs/devices/disks/<volume-in-question>"
This file contains meta data is in the xml format, you can ignore it as we don't use it now.

Hi,
Now that you have the file "tools-winPre2k-9.6.5.iso", you have parts needed to be able to install VMware Tools in your Windows 98 VM.
An .iso file is not an application (even while your windows says so) it is a CD rom image and VMware Player is able to open it directly.
This cdrom file contains the installation files for VMware Tools.
The thing to do is to point the virtual CD from your VM to it and "connect" and then run the setup from within your windows 98 VM.
If you need exact steps, tell me.
PS: Thanks Gimmely for the extra explanations and yes we are all volunteers down here trying to help out others who have a problem.

Thanks for reporting the issue.
I've tried both SC650 and Omnikey readers but did not see any issues. We've ordered a Gemalto card reader for testing. If it does not work with the version of pcsclite in ESXi, I will update it.
Thanks,
Lance
Hello,
Welcome at the VMware communities forum.
Unfortunately Apple does not allow you to run a virtual macOS or OS X on non-Apple branded hardware.
Since this violates Apple's EULA (and as such the VMware Community Terms of Use), any issues you have with trying to run macOS or OS X using VMware Workstation or VMware Workstation Player cannot be discussed at this forum.
You'll need to have apple hardware and use a product like VMware Fusion or VMware ESXi and run a virtual copy of macOS / OS X on that in order for us to be able to help you.
Hope you understand,

strange, it's happening the opposite.
if i keep holding altgr button i can type.
isn't there a way to fix this?
Thank you. And I assume per TID 1022312 that the Scalability and Performance issues related wont really matter.
Thanks for the update. Looking forward to the patch.
Just for clarity, is this issue being produced by the guest or the host on the fast ring?
Hi Jason,
Yes it certainly is!
I don't see a reason for an impact for this use case. Neither for scalability nor for performance.
